Duration 10′

Street Fighting People is a piece commissioned by Maison de France to celebrate 50 years of the 1968 Revolution. This event had a substantial political and cultural impact in France and worldwide. The piece proposes an interpretation of the common sounding elements between 1968 and the Street Journeys of 2013-2018, political insurgence that filled the streets with protestants in Brazil. The traffic jam, a terror of the resented high class eager to restate his power, the buzz and rhythm of slogans, shots, and bombs, and finally Lula’s voice and Fabiano Leitão’s trumpet, announcing a latent and unavoidable truth ever since. The lyrics are an adaptation of the song Street Fighting Man by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, an anthem of the 1968 Revolution, translated to Latin American cities and contexts, and updated to reflect the overcoming of the individualism of the militant man for the militant people. The piece was premiered on 24th May 2018 by the Abstrai Ensemble at the Maison de France.
Street Fighting People – Lyrics
(Adapted from the lyrics by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger)
Everywhere I hear the sound of marching, charging feet, people
‘Cause summer’s here and the time is right for fighting in the street, people
Well what can a poor people do
Except to sing for a contemporary ensemble
‘Cause in sleepy Rio de Janeiro town
There’s just no place for street fighting people.
No
Hey! Think the time is right for a palace revolution
‘Cause where we live the game to play is compromise solution
Well, then what can a poor people do
Except to sing for a contemporary band
‘Cause in sleepy Rio de Janeiro town
There’s just no place for a street fighting people
No
Hey! Said my name is called disturbance
I’ll shout and scream, I’ll kill the prosecutor, I’ll rail at all his servants
Well, what can a poor people do
Except to sing for a contemporary ensemble
‘Cause in sleepy Rio de Janeiro town
There’s just noplace for street fighting people.
No
(Lyrics from Street Fighting Man – Keith Richards and Mick Jagger)
Everywhere I hear the sound of marching, charging feet, boy
‘Cause summer’s here and the time is right for fighting in the street, boy
Well what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock ‘n’ roll band
‘Cause in sleepy London town
There’s just no place for a street fighting man
No
Hey! Think the time is right for a palace revolution
‘Cause where I live the game to play is compromise solution
Well, then what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock ‘n’ roll band
‘Cause in sleepy London town
There’s just no place for a street fighting man
No
Hey! Said my name is called disturbance
I’ll shout and scream, I’ll kill the king, I’ll rail at all his servants
Well, what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock ‘n’ roll band
‘Cause in sleepy London town
There’s just no place for a street fighting man
